The BPS argues that the application of psychological theory and insight to the practice of counselling can only happen in a systematic and conscious manner after the receipt of GBR. TRAINING ROUTES INTO THERAPY 13 Each student enrolled for the diploma is expected to ®nd a coordinator of training who acts as a mentor, guide and advocate as the individual gradually works through both the academic and practical criteria which comprise the diploma. ACCREDITED COURSES The alternative to the independent route is by doing an accredited course.
Once this has been done, the individual is eligible to apply for enrolment as a candidate for the Society's Diploma in Counselling Psychology. This is in effect a Professional Qualifying Examination in Counselling Psychology. The diploma is not a course. What it offers is a set of criteria concerning training and practice which must be satis®ed if an individual is to receive chartered status as a counselling psychologist. As such it can be described as a yardstick against which an individual can measure her or his progress towards satisfying the diploma requirements.
